CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The Cheektowaga Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit was at the scene of a homicide Monday morning and family members think the victim’s ex-boyfriend was the shooter.

Assistant Chief of Police Jim Speyer says a woman in her 30’s was found dead inside 33 Sierra Drive off Cedargrove Circle of an apparent gunshot wound.

“Approximately at 8 o’clock this morning we got a call from a frantic neighbor who stated they believe somebody nearby here, next door, died from an apparent homicide,” said Assistant Chief Speyer.

Police officers arrived and found the victim.  The department’s crime scene investigation unit and homicide detectives were called to the scene.

Family members arrived at the scene throughout the morning as they learned of the news. A man who is close to the family tells Cheektowaga Chronicle that the family thinks the victim’s ex-boyfriend was the shooter.

“He was supposedly riding back and forth most of the morning and eventually he got out of his car or truck or whatever he came in, and kicked that door in and went in there and shot that girl.”

The man says that the victim’s 4-year-old daughter was inside the house at the time.

“They’re very, very upset as you can understand, and so are we.  This is sad, very sad,” said Mr. Speyer

Midday, the Erie County Medical Examiner, and two officials from the Erie County District Attorney’s Office joined in the investigation.

A group of around 50 people consisting of family and friends gathered at the scene.  Representatives from the Stop the Violence Coalition and Buffalo Peacemakers comforted the family while law enforcement worked.

“I told them they need to go into prayer more than ever.  When people think about God it kind of eases them down a little bit,” said Murray Holman, Executive Director of the Stop the Violence Coalition.
